Location
Perched on a rocky crag of the Sonnenberg mountain at an altitude of over 1,000 metres is the historic Castel Annenberg estate with its magnificent castle, the dreamlike, late-Gothic St. Anne’s castle chapel, and the mountain farm, which was recently completely refurbished, along with 50 hectares of land.
The castle complex is steeped in history and was mentioned as early as the 13th century, when the nobility from Wangen (formerly from Burgus) built a tower house here. Nothing is known about how it would have looked at this time.
It was not until the important South Tyrolean noble family of Annenberg, to whom the castle owes its name, built four more towers and an enclosing wall at the end of the 15th century and start of the 16th century that it began to resemble its present form.
The estate has changed hands many times over the centuries. It enjoyed its glory days when it hosted lavish festivities and, for a time, it housed a prestigious library containing an important copy of the famous Nibelungenlied poem. However, Castel Annenberg lapsed into disrepair around the end of the 17th century and was close to falling completely into ruin. Extensive renovation and conservation work did not begin until 1900, and this continues to this day.
We have owned the estate since 2009. We are a long-established South Tyrolean family. We care very deeply about preserving the historic buildings and ensuring their long-term development, which is, of course, a significant undertaking considering the size of the estate. However, we are making excellent progress, step by step. In addition to preserving the historic buildings, it has always been our goal to build up the mountain farm and vineyards and put them on a modern, sustainable footing. We have now succeeded in this and are delighted to present our excellent wines here.
